Accessibility
We want every BrainPopper game to be playable with a keyboard, without animation and with a screen reader. Here’s what exists today and what we know isn’t perfect.
Your preferences
In every game
- All controls are real buttons with visible focus outlines and text labels for screen readers.
- Touch targets are at least 44×44 pixels.
- Colour is never the only signal: shapes, symbols, numbers and text carry the meaning.
- Sound is off by default and is never needed to play.
- Nothing flashes rapidly. Reduced-motion settings replace movement with simple changes.
- Help, Pause, Restart and Exit are always in the same toolbar. Switching tabs pauses timed games.
SwitchPop
Keyboard: Tab and Enter/Space, or number keys 1–4; P or Esc pauses. Each card has a spoken label such as “triangle, facing up”, and you can show those labels on screen. Practice mode has no timer.
Loop Loom
Untimed. Arrow keys move between tiles and Enter or Space turns the focused one. Every tile is described in words (row, column, shape, which sides it joins, stars). List view shows the whole board as a list, and a status line says how far the thread reaches.
EchoStep
Arrow keys or number keys 1–9 pick tiles. Relaxed pace slows the reveal; Text mode lists the steps in words with no time limit. Results played with these options are labelled with the pace used.
Known limitations
- SwitchPop’s standard 45-second round is a reaction game and needs quick responses; Practice mode is the untimed alternative.
- We’ve tested with automated accessibility checks and keyboard-only play in desktop browsers. Testing with VoiceOver, NVDA and TalkBack on real devices hasn’t been completed yet, so some announcements may be imperfect.
